DESCRIPTION

The Department of South & Southeast Asian Studies at the University of California, Berkeley invites applications for a pool of part-time lecturers to teach one or more lower division Reading and Composition courses and/or lower and upper division elective courses, in either Southeast Asian Studies or South Asian Studies. Screening of applicants begins immediately and will continue as needed. Applicants will be selected from this pool throughout the year. The number of positions varies from semester to semester, depending on the needs of the Department. Positions typically start at the beginning of the semester (UC Berkeley’s academic calendar can be viewed at http://registrar.berkeley.edu/), and appointments may be renewed based on need, funding, and performance.

A Lecturer teaches a lecture course (or courses), advises students, and holds regular office hours. Generally, each course meets for a total of 3 hours per week (usually 1.5 hours twice a week).

Basic qualifications: completion of all Ph.D. or equivalent requirements except dissertation, in SSEAS or a related field, by the time of application.

Additional qualifications: Ph.D. or equivalent required by the start date. For Reading and Composition courses, experience teaching college composition is required.

Preferred qualifications: relevant college-level teaching experience.

Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience (starting annual, full-time salary is $47,584). Some credit will be given to prior college-level teaching experience (not including graduate student or summer session teaching).

The initial review date for submissions will be July 24, 2014. Applications received by this date receive priority; to receive full consideration for Fall 2014, please submit all materials prior to this date. These positions will remain open until filled. The pool will close on June 30, 2016. If you would like to remain in the pool after that time you will need to submit a new application. Additional information on the Department and campus can be found at http://sseas.berkeley.edu/, and to apply for a lecturer appointment go to https://aprecruit.berkeley.edu/apply/JPF00455.

This is a non-tenured, temporary position: the appointments to the title of Lecturer are self-terminating (no further notice on non-reappointment will be forthcoming) and do not create an obligation on the part of the University either to extend or renew the appointment outlined above. Any reappointment will be preceded by an assessment. Employment is contingent upon proof of eligibility to work in the United States.

The University is committed to supporting employees as they balance work and family.
The University of California is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, age or protected veteran status.
